What Is a Backing Ring?

Connection in thermoplastic and thermoset (GRP/GRE) piping systems

A Backing Ring is a critical component used in industrial piping systems for easy assembly of leak-free flange connections. An FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) Backing Ring is placed behind PE, PP, PVC, GRP stub flanges enabling bolted connections to steel flanges, valves, pumps, and other flanged equipment.

Unlike a traditional metal Backing Ring, an FRP Backing Ring is fully corrosion free, making it ideal for chemical processing, water treatment, mining, and marine applications. The lightweight construction of each Backing Ring reduces installation time and costs while maintaining the mechanical strength required for high-pressure pipe systems.

Manufacturing Process

At BackingRing.com, we use two advanced manufacturing methods. Our Hot Pressing technology produces Backing Rings in high quantities for PE, PP, PVC pipes up to DN300 with consistent wall thickness, precise bolt hole positioning, and excellent surface finish. For larger diameters, we use RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding) to create Backing Rings DN350 to DN1200 with precise reinforcement positioning and constant quality within precise tolerances.

Sizes and Standards

Our Backing Ring range covers nominal diameters up to DN4000, suitable for small-bore instrumentation lines up to large-diameter water mains and industrial pipelines. All Backing Rings are available in international drilling standards including EN1092, ANSI B16.5/B16.47, AWWA, JIS, and BS, ensuring compatibility with flanged equipment worldwide.
